WorldPride in Copenhagen is one step closer to becoming reality

Copenhagen Pride inching closer to hosting WorldPride

The WorldPride Committee of InterPride has approved the Copenhagen bid for WorldPride 2021, putting the world’s largest LGBTQ event one step closer to being hosted in Copenhagen.

Earlier this month, up to three million people gathered in Madrid for WorldPride 2017. In 2021, they might gather in Copenhagen. Sunday afternoon, the WorldPride bid from Copenhagen Pride was approved unanimously by the WorldPride Committee of InterPride, and it will now to move to the final vote.

– We are happy that our bid is generating excitement, says Lars Henriksen, chair of Copenhagen Pride. – We have gone to great lengths to put inclusivity and diversity front and center in our bid, so that everyone can feel welcome in Copenhagen.

The WorldPride Committee of InterPride vets all incoming bids to assess whether they live up to the requirements of InterPride. They unanimously approved letting the Copenhagen bid move to the final vote, which will take place during the Annual General Meeting of InterPride in October.

– With the support of the Danish government, the Copenhagen mayors, several local governments across Greater Copenhagen and a unified Copenhagen LGBTQ community, we can deliver a world-class event, says Lars Henriksen.

The bid from Fort Lauderdale was also approved to move to the final vote. Hence, Copenhagen and Fort Lauderdale are now competing to host WorldPride 2021.

– It’s going to be though. But we feel confident heading into this final stretch, says Lars Henriksen. – People are excited about the prospect of uniting WorldPride and EuroGames in Copenhagen. It’s an amazing opportunity to create a unique event.

The vote will take place on October 8. In the meantime, Pan Idræt is preparing their bid for EuroGames, which will be presented at the Annual General Assembly of EGSLF in March 2018. The unified event of WorldPride and EuroGames has been given the name of Copenhagen 2021.

Copenhagen 2021 is the mega event that combines EuroGames and WorldPride for the first time ever. We invite the whole world to a spectacular celebration of sportsmanship, LGBTQ rights and love – wrapped up in a rainbow-colored pride party where #YouAreIncluded.
