Government support for Copenhagen 2021

The Danish government is now throwing its weight behind the bids to host WorldPride and EuroGames

Government support for Copenhagen 2021

With an official letter of support, the Danish government has announced its support for hosting WorldPride and EuroGames in Copenhagen in 2021.

It’s the first time that a potential host city bids to host both WorldPride and EuroGames, paving the way for Copenhagen 2021 to be a historic event that combines culture, sports and human rights in Copenhagen.

– I am both happy and proud that the government, with the prime minister at the forefront, is supporting the efforts to host WorldPride and EuroGames in Copenhagen in 2021. It is important that we show that everyone – regardless of gender, sexuality and gender identity – is free to be themselves. Denmark is a champion of LGBTI rights, and therefore an ideal host, says Minister for Equality Karen Ellemann in a government statement.

The idea of Copenhagen 2021 comes from Copenhagen Pride and Pan Idraet, who set up the project organization Happy Copenhagen to facilitate the bidding process and execution of the global mega event.

– We are handing over an innovative and ambitious bid. And it is wonderful to have the government’s support. This kind of political support has never been seen before within WorldPride or EuroGames. It emphasizes the Danish wish to lead the way in our fight for diversity, says Lars Christian Østergreen, Managing Director of Happy Copenhagen.
